Airport Hotels

Recently, on my late return trip from Myanmar to Don Muang Airport in Bangkok, I had to stay overnight for my early morning flight. I thought, I’d rush into the centre of the city for a great Thai meal and my favourite Pad Thai noodles making the time complete with a last minute shopping spree. Alas, my flight arrived too late for anything other than getting to the airport hotel. Like airplane food, airport hotels have had a bad rap for years so I dreaded the thought. However, accommodations these days are not make-do shelters anymore but spiffy hotels with all the frills. No more stuffy smelling rooms and soggy buffet styled food. With luggage atop a trolley cart, the short walk in an air conditioned walkway was a learning curve about airport hotels within airport complexes. Since then I’ve made a point of checking out attached airport hotels around the world.

1. From immigration and customs it took a few minutes to walk to the sleek, marble reception area of the Amari Airport Hotel. With a choice of accommodations and excellent business facilities, this 423 room building was nirvana. The off-the-lobby airy, huge restaurant has a come hither cleanliness with a varied menu. Obviously, from the activity in the fitness centre, this is an important area for the hotel.. My room was clean and even had lights bright enough to read with, albeit, not the most exhilarating colour combo – avocado and yellow.

There’s a 24 hour open bar and restaurant, a coffee shop, airline desk and money changing facilities. Mercure also has non-smoking policy, so rare in Europe.
